Edinburgh: A Day in the Life of a Backpacker

A time log of my first full day in Edinburgh:

05.00 Awake, but decided to stay in bed for another hour.

06.00 Out of bed. Snow is on the ground.

06.45 Breakfast. Started reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is from Edinburgh.

08.00 The first glimpse of dawn. Walked toward the city, taking pictures along the way.

08.45 A pharmacist has informed me that my preferred eye drops, readily available in Australia and the US, are not widely available in Britain. Therefore, I shall switch from Optive to Optrex.

09.30 At Edinburgh Castle. Due to the snow, they pushed back today's opening time to 10.30.

09.45 Browsed inside a store filled with Scotland-filled merchandise, including the requisite kilts.

10.30 Brunch at the Deacon's House Cafe. In 1876, the story of William "Deacon" Brodie inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write "Jekyll and Hyde".

12.30 Took a free tour of the Royal Mile.

14.00 Visited the John Knox House.

15.00 Briefly visited the Museum of Edinburgh.

15.40 Went on an art and architecture-themed tour of Parliament.

17.30 Donated my copy of Murder on the Orient Express to Broughton Street Bookshop, a second-hand bookshop that supports those with Asperger Syndrome.

18.15 Bought dinner at a supermarket on my way back to the hostel.

18.45 Back at the hostel. Turns out that my dormmate is Mexican. He's studying at the University of Edinburgh and is between leases.

19.00 Made dinner in the kitchen. The girl in the kitchen is from Brisbane. We talk Australian politics, complain about the lack of quality heating in British buildings, and exchange travel stories.

21.00 Bedtime.
